About Socrates
 Life: 470 - 399 Country: Greece Profession: Philosopher; Socrates (470 BC-399 BC) was a Classical Greek philosopher. He is best known for the creation of Socratic irony and the elenchus which bears his name. Specifically, Socrates is known for the practice of a philosophical type of pedagogy, in which the teacher asks questions of the student in order to elicit the best answer from the student themself. He is credited with exerting a great influence upon the founders of Western philosophy (viz, Plato and Aristotle). While Socrates's principal contribution to philosophy is in the field of ethics, many scholars maintain that he made important contributions in epistemology and logic as well.
